A remote, windswept island with the atmospheric remains of an important pilgrimage site.
In the Middle Ages Ynys Enlli, or Bardsey Island, was an important destination for Christian pilgrims. Indeed, it was said that three visits here were equivalent to one visit to Rome. Twenty thousand ‘holy men’ are reputed to be buried in its soil, though how so many could be accommodated on an island that is only 1½ miles long and 1 mile across at its widest point is a moot point. What is undeniable is the special atmosphere of the place, nurtured by its remoteness and the rich blend of history and legend that has built up around it.
The island lies 2 miles off the tip of the Llŷn peninsula, and access is still difficult today. The Welsh name Ynys Enlli means ‘the island in the currents’, but a trip across the choppy waters offers ample rewards. Once on the island, it is worth heading for the remains of St Mary’s Abbey in the north. Only the remains of a 13th-century tower stand today, built when an Augustinian Priory was established here under the reign of Llywelyn the Great.
The tower stands today in a relatively modern graveyard, but two medieval gravestones from the original foundation survive and can be seen inside the tower. One of these, dating from the 10th or 11th centuries, is carved with a human figure. Only the lower portion survives: two legs emerge from a pleated skirt, while around the edge runs an inscription that seems to commemorate ‘Esyllt’, or a similar name.
Today the whole of Ynys Enlli is a nature reserve. It is a peaceful and deeply fascinating place to walk around.
A place of solitude, an island on which to wander and contemplate life’s journey.
