Unique collections that show the cultural life of a county
The largest museum collection in north Wales, Gwynedd Museum and Art Gallery was founded when Bangor University was established in 1884. The collections today are an amalgamation of the university collection, Gwynedd County collection and the private museum of a Victorian sea captain.
The significant collections encompass archaeology, furniture, textiles and domestic and agricultural items and they recount the area’s social history from the 17th to 21st centuries, as well as prints, photographs and art collections. The collections are unique, providing the only material record of the social and cultural life of north-west Wales. Neolithic axes, Bronze Age urns, a Roman sword, medieval tiles, carved slates of Dyffryn Ogwen in Bethesda, Welsh dressers and fabrics are just some of the items that give an insight into the cultural heritage of the region.
Plans are currently being developed to move the collection to the Bishop’s Palace, one of the oldest buildings in Bangor dating back to the 16th century.
