Plas Heli is a not for profit company that was established to operate the new Welsh National Sailing Academy and Events Centre that’s due to open in Pwllheli during the Summer of 2015. The Hub at Plas Heli is home to Grwp Awyr Agored (Outdoor Activity Group), an umbrella organisation for a number of different outdoor activity clubs in the Lleyn and Dwyfor area supporting them to encourage local residents to enjoy and appreciate the areas’s natural resources.
The Hub is a storage space for the clubs’ equipment enabling the clubs to save money by sharing, clubs such as the Pwllheli Rowing Club, Lleyn Surf Club, Dwyfor Adventure Club, CHIPAC (Pwllheli Youth Sailing), Pwllheli Sailing Club and the Pwllheli and Lleyn Sea Cadets. When the Academy opens its doors in the Summer of 2015 Plas Heli will also be a warm haven to welcome the clubs home from their adventures across the region.
Over the next few months, until the Academy building is ready, Plas Heli and the clubs are planning to organise outdoor activities taster days and local events to encourage more participation.
Plas Heli will be a vibrant centre for local residents and locals alike with meeting rooms available, a restaurant, bar and a large exhibition hall. The new visitor and events pontoon will be ideal to welcome the visitors arriving by sea and the step down pontoon with the floating slipway will ensure that kayakers and rowers will have easy access to the inner harbour. The project has been supported by the European Regional Development Fund, through the Welsh Government and Gwynedd Council.
When the Academy opens in the Summer of 2015 it will provide Pwllheli with a new venue that will cater for the local, national and international market on a spectacular site with views of the Snowdonia mountain, Cardigan Bay and the coast of the Lleyn Peninsula. August and July 2015 are already set to be buzzing with sailing championships welcoming visitors from all over the world to Pwllheli.
