A landscape fit for artists
The beautiful Ogwen Valley, with its farms and cottages nestling at the feet of iconic, towering mountains such as Tryfan, has been an inspiration for artists since the 18th century. There is a long tradition of landscape artists painting here, from Thomas Jones through J M W Turner and the eminent Victorians to present-day artists such as Rob Piercy.
Among the best at capturing the glowering stormy skies of the valley were the paintings of John Piper (1903–92). A war artist known for his paintings of bombed buildings, he rented a cottage in the valley in the late 1940s. Here Piper captured the drama and the unique tones and hues of the area in paintings such as Jagged Rocks under Tryfan.
A fine new Visitor Centre between the classic walks around Llyn Idwal and Llyn Ogwen makes a good base for exploration.
